Boulogne-sur-Mer: strategic urban SUDS for storm water management
In the Boulogne-Sur-Mer region, Condette is low-lying with a high water table. Drainage channels regularly overflow, flooding properties. A road will be reconstructed to incorporate 300m3 buffering, draining trenches will be designed on each side of the road with a permeable surface. At the same time this will provide more attractive and safer pedestrian walkways and cycle tracks. Tree planting will be incorporated into the SUDS system, having a water management function and improving biodiversity and landscape. The trees will also have a role in car speed reduction. 10ha will be better protected from flooding. Use of a road for water storage is an exciting innovation and offers many opportunities throughout the region. Pilots will demonstrate cross border design principles.
